Best supplement for joint pain brand, preferably not expensive, but you obviously want it to work?

I'm thinking of getting my beau a bottle of glucosamine chondroitin since he's so young (20s) but already have achy joints. It's a chronic problem for him and I do not think he's ever tried any supplements. But whenever I look at the bottles in the store I am never sure what to get. I would like something that works and is relatively inexpensive (since I assume this would be a long-term thing). Nature Made and CVS store brand seem to go on sale a lot, but I do not know about their quality. And my second question: Does formula really adding MSM to make it work better? Oh and there's regular, double, and triple strength formula. How do you decide which one to use?
